[Mizuno Case Study] Temperature rise test of baseball spike shoes

The artificial solar lighting XC-500EFSS was used in a temperature rise simulation experiment to measure the surface temperature of spike shoes when exposed to sunlight.

Our artificial solar lighting XC-500EFSS was used in the “Shoe Surface Temperature Visualization Experiment,” in which the state of sunlight shining on the “WAVE LIGHTREVO” baseball spike shoes—released by Mizuno Corporation (Osaka City), a leading sports equipment manufacturer—was recreated indoors, and the surface temperature of the spike shoes was measured.

In addition, the results of the experiment were posted on the Mizuno website.

<Test method>
Soil was spread on a pad, and the shoes were placed on it. The surface temperature of the shoes was measured over time using thermography when the shoes were irradiated from directly above with artificial solar lighting.
• Measurement environment: 30°C × 50% RH
• Model used: Artificial solar lighting XC-500EFSS (900 W/m²) manufactured by SERIC Co., Ltd.
• Test results: When black x black spikes and white x silver spikes were irradiated from directly above with artificial solar lighting for 30 minutes, the difference in shoe surface temperature between the color combinations was 20.7°C.
*According to Mizuno’s research. The surface temperature of the shoes after 30 minutes of exposure to artificial sunlight is shown.
*The effects and sensations experienced while wearing them may vary from person to person.
*Effects may vary depending on conditions such as the wearing environment and the condition of the shoes.

“White is power.” This is the concept with which the baseball spike shoes “WAVE LIGHTREVO” were designed.
The difference in surface temperature when exposed to the sun between white spike shoes and black spike shoes can be as much as 20°C. Therefore, one of the features of “WAVE LIGHTREVO” is that its superior comfort makes long periods of exercise less strenuous, which will result in a difference in performance.

Artificial concentrating-type solar lighting (super spotlight type) that can produce light equivalent to midsummer direct sunlight of 1 sun (1,000 W/m2) or 100,000 Lx

Direct sunlight in midsummer is referred to as “1 sun.” Its irradiance (radiant intensity) is 1,000 W/m2 (1 kW/m2), and the illuminance is approximately 100,000 Lx.

Artificial concentrating-type solar lighting (super spotlight type) can produce this light.

Artificial solar lighting super spot type “Models: XC-100EFSS and XC-500EFSS” are able to achieve an irradiance equivalent to midsummer sunlight of 1,000 W/m2 (in this case, the illuminance is about 60,000 Lx). “Models: XC-100AFSS and XC-500AFSS” are able to produce 100,000 Lx, making it possible to reproduce midsummer sunlight indoors at any time.
